Ancient Beltane Traditions with Olivia Pepper: May Baskets, May Crowns and Sugared Blooms
Friday, April 13th
$30 per person, 12 person max
Join visiting mystic poet and folklorist Olivia Pepper for a very special class, highlighting a tradition carried down by her Welsh matrilineal line: the tradition of May Baskets. May Baskets are small anonymous gifts of candy and flowers, traditionally dropped on neighbors' doorsteps on May Day to celebrate the height of spring. But the tradition is much older than that, and carries a profound story related to both the faerie world and to ancient holy femininity. (Speaking of holy femininity, if you come to this class, you'll learn why Friday the 13th used to be considered good luck, not bad!) Then Olivia will demonstrate sugaring edible blooms, and Melissa of Flying Bear will finish up by teaching flower crown construction techniques to round out your Beltane celebration tool kit!
While this is not a crafting class, per se, you will leave with the ability to construct a May Basket, a May crown, sugared blooms and a deepened understanding of traditions which you may want to help bring back into resurgence!
