What is a 'farmer florist'?
Being a farmer florist means we have our hands and hearts directly in every component of a bouquet’s life…from choosing the seed out of a pretty catalog in January, to hauling manure into the fields in March, to the heady, crazy days of harvest time in August and September, and the hectic yet gorgeous moments of putting together the flowers for a wedding or party. We like it this way because we feel so much more connected to the plants we’re designing with, and it comes through in our work. Plus, it just feels good to be on our farm…
It’s a huge blessing that we get to be outside most days, that we are connected to the seasons, and that we can spend time with our family while we cultivate and create. And it’s hella hard…this farming and floristry… We spend a lot of time troubleshooting, fixing things, in the dirt, in the rain. And we spend some time lamenting lost labor or lost crops. But I tell you, it’s all worth it. Because even just one afternoon spent walking the rows of dahlias in August, or an early morning cutting heirloom cosmos while the swallows swoop around overhead, or handing over an achingly gorgeous bouquet to a misty eyed bride…THAT is what’s up. That’s the “Why”. We do this farmer florist thing because in the aggregate…it’s beautiful. And that’s what we want to create in this world.
